disorganized make-up drawer

disorganized make-up drawer

Well, there was a great foundation here, there was a drawer organizer in place!  But, here’s what wasn’t working:

1)  The white plastic was stained-permanently

2) Many of the compartments were too small

3) The paper towels to cover the stains were unsightly

4) There was too much stuff in the organizer

5) Everything was all mixed up

5 DIY Organization Tips to solve the problems:

1)  Take everything out of the drawer

2)  Use larger drawer organizers from Target, avoiding white

3)  Purge old make-up.  For tips on how long to store make-up, please read more here.

4) Move some items to another storage area.

5)  Load (less) back into the new organizers, placing items of the same type together: brushes with brushes, lip gloss with lip gloss, etc.

Drawer Organizer from OrganizedAtoZ.com

Drawer Organizer from OrganizedAtoZ.com

Final pick for bathroom organizing products:  the drawer organizer!  Drawers are always an easy place to stuff way too much stuff and quickly shut the drawer.  We want the countertops to be well-organized and we want the hidden areas to be organized as well.  I use a drawer organizer in my bathroom to store all of my make-up instead of digging through a make-up bag.  Storing items in each compartment makes them easy to see as well as easy to access.

It’s also very important to point out that we need to make sure we go through make-up products on a regular basis and purge old or potentially spoiled products.  For your health and safety,  please use my article on make-up storage as a guideline.

Acrylic Holder from OrganizedAtoZ.com

Acrylic Holder from OrganizedAtoZ.com

The acrylic holder-I love these guys!  Most of us have certain products that are out on the bathroom counter just sitting around looking like clutter.  I know my kids have hair products and perfumes, lip gloss and toothpaste.  In my own bathroom I have (sadly) many beauty creams, perfumes and lotions.  When it all just sits out, the space looks random and cluttered.  Bring in the acrylic organizer.  All you have to do is set it on the counter, load it up and suddenly everything has a home and looks like it belongs there!  It instantly transforms the counter and yet it keeps everything visible and at your fingertips.  And of course, whenever you provide a home, you’ve created a cap on how much you can keep out-only what fits!

Find an acrylic holder that fits your space and provides a quick fix for countertop clutter.

Over-the-door towel holder from OrganizedAtoZ.com

Over-the-door towel holder from OrganizedAtoZ.com

An over-the-door towel holder!  Doors provide a blank canvas just chomping at the bit to hold an organizing product.  Using the back of a door really is a great way to take advantage of unused space to turn in into storage space.  The great feature to this product is that it slides over the top of your door yet allows your door to shut completely.  This is a helpful for people who don’t like to put holes in doors for future resale, people who are renting and for people who would like to take their handy dandy organizing products with them when they move.

Other benefits to storing towels on the door:

  • It stores towels closest to where you are using them-in the bathroom.
  • It allows towel storage for several family members.
  • It allows towels to dry so you may use them for more than one shower.

This is a simple and easy solution to stretch storage space in your bathroom!

Organized Cord Keeper

Organized Cord Keeper

It was a morning disaster just waiting to happen…  I should have let my old blow dryer go a long time ago considering I could see the wires inside the damaged cord.  One day I dropped it in the garbage can and ran into my daughter’s room to use hers. That wasn’t going to work for long so soon I was strolling through Target in the market for a shiny, new model.  Low and behold my excitement when I found not just a red blow dryer (yes, my favorite color), but a red blow dryer with a retractable cord!  I had struck gold!

I can only imagine what my curling iron and straightening iron were thinking when I nestled my proud new purchase amongst them in the drawer.  Jealousy reigned no doubt.

Many bathrooms tend to be short on space so ry these bathroom organizing tips to stretch your space:

  1. Let old make-up go, it’s not healthy to use it.  Check out tips for make-up organization.
  2. Use smaller versions of blow dryers such as travel size or blow dryers with retractable cords.
  3. Use turntables under bathroom sinks to easily spin and grab what you need.
  4. Store only bathroom items in the bathroom.
  5. Install shelves, hooks and cabinets to use wall space effectively.
  6. Don’t forget about the big, blank canvas on the back of your bathroom door for storage.

Stretch the space in your bathroom and don’t forget to treat yourself to a bubble bath while your in there every once in a while!

Organized Bin of Medication

Organized Bin of Medication

Medication organization is very important for the health and safety of  you, your children and even your pets.  Previously a back office medical assistant, I feel strongly about storing medications properly and not holding onto old, unused and expired medications-no, no, no!   Normally I don’t tell people to get rid of things, but in this case health trumps saving a few dollars by using another family member’s old prescription or using old medications in general.

I keep my medications stored up high simply by using a clear storage bin labeled “Medicine” on the top shelf of my linen closet in the hallway.  This way it is stored up high away from my kids or kids visiting our home.  Most people want to store their medication in the bathroom and this is the last place you want to keep it.  I recently checked out these storage tips from eHow:

  • Store medications in a cool, dry environment
  • Do not expose medications to moisture
  • Moisture and heat can cause medications to break down
  • Kitchens & bathrooms are not good places for storing medications due to humidity
  • When you receive a new medication, be sure to check with your pharmacist for proper storage.  Some medications do require refrigeration.

Be sure to check expiration dates, smell and color changes of your medications on a regular basis.  Replace medications that are out of date or changing in any way.  For information on how to properly dispose of medication, please check out my past organizing post on proper disposal.

October 17th, 2010 Bathroom Organizing

Do I have an organized home?  Of course I do!  Do I have a perfect home?  Of course I don’t!  No one is perfect and there is no need to be. The older I get the more I believe it.  But there are always things I want to do to improve my home, small scale projects such as adding valances to my family room windows to larger scale projects like installing new carpet and exterior paint.  But for now, my goal has been to create a nice space to relax without breaking the bank.  I love relaxing in the tub so I started there. I was getting tired of the color on my bathroom walls and lack of decor; I had the same boring picture hanging up that has been around for about 15 years.  It turns out, that once I started sprucing up my bathroom, I fell in love with the color all over again.  So, here’s a photo collection of the changes I made.

I got tired of seeing all of my beauty products through the glass shower doors.

So, I bought a curtain-problem solved.

cimg1773I wanted to have nice candles and easy access to my bubble bath.  I found this wall unit at Ikea for about $25.

cimg17451

I updated my wall art for about $25 and found a wall unit at Ikea for about $30 so I could bring my towels into the bathroom instead of going out to the hall closet each time I needed one.

cimg18521Not only do I want to have an organized home, but I want to have a home where I can relax and take care of myself each day.  I didn’t make big, expensive changes to enjoy my space and, happily, I don’t even need new paint now that I like my old paint color again!

Achieving home organization in small spaces can be a little bit tricky, but it is definitely do-able and it doesn’t have to cost very much to get the job done!  Under bathroom sinks can tend to be tight, have awkward pipes in the way and sometimes they can be pretty tall areas with wasted space.    As you can see in the “before” photo, there is a jumble of common beauty products that need a home that makes them more accessible.  You can see rollers, shampoos, lotions, the things we all have tucked away in the bathroom.

100_14061   As you can see in the “after” photo, the items are now easily accessible by adding a turntable to the right.  All you have to do is spin and grab what you need.  This prevents you from having things tip causing a domino affect, making everything fall over.  On the left hand side a cabinet shelf was added.  You simply place the shelf where you want it, there is no installation required.  This allows you to store items both on the shelf as well as under the shelf, making it easier to separate items so you can reach in and grab what you need easily.  In this case, it wasn’t about needing to get rid of excess bathroom items, it was really just about separating items and stretching the storage space so they weren’t in a jumble.  Once you have a jumble, it’s so easy to just keep shoving  more stuff on top of it.  The total for these products would be somewhere in the range of $20-not bad!

Stay organized and stretch bathroom space for under $20 and get ready faster every morning!

We all end up with make-up that we’ve had for a long time and we aren’t using tucked away in the drawer or make-up bag.  Maybe it was a color that didn’t work out, maybe we got some free samples at the mall.  Just like many areas of our home, we just plain end up with excess.  Not only will it make it easier to get ready in the morning when you have what you really like and need, but using old make-up can actually put your health at risk.  I insist (I have to get tough here) that you to part with old make-up and spring for replacements.  The time and money it will cost you if you you end up at the doctor’s office with an eye infection will be worse than paying to replace old stuff in the first place.  And you’ll still have to throw out the old products caused the infection in the first place anyway.  Here are a few general guidelines for how long you should keep make-up:

  1. Blush 18-24 months
  2. Foundation up to 18 months-throw out sooner if a watery top layer forms
  3. Make-up around the eyes is a sensitive place where bacteria can form:  mascara after only 3 months, liquid liner up to 6 months, eyeshadow about 1 year.

Be sure to toss anything that has had a change in color, smell or consistency no matter how long you’ve had it.  Take a few minutes today to declutter and give the old stuff the heave ho so you can both look and feel good in the make-up that you do love!
