stop-watchWhy is it that it’s so easy to put off the things that we think we ‘should‘ be doing?  It might be losing weight, it might be exercising and of course my focus here today is on getting our home organization projects done.  We walk past the piles, we feel the stress, we want to make a change, but the piles still sit there taunting us.  Well, there’s no time like the present and as Nike would say, “Just do it!”

It’s time to put away the excuses, time to stop putting off until tomorrow what you can do today.  I just read a short article in ‘Shape’ magazine with the headline:  “Right now is the Perfect Time.”  So I say it’s  time to get organized!  Who’s with me?

The article states that you should decide to take action right away even if you take baby steps to get there.  Let’s say you want to organize your closet, then start by just writing down your criteria for the clothing items need to leave-such as clothes that don’t fit or stained items, then be done for the day.  The next day you can bring in bags or boxes for garbage and donation, then be done for the day.  The next day you could purge one side of your closet, then be done for the day.  You get the picture!

Stop putting off your organizing projects by taking manageable steps that will give you the boost to keep on going so your stuff won’t taunt you anymore; you can do it!!  :)

organized coat closet

Are you nervous when you open your coat closet?  Do you have to put your hands up to ‘protect the face’ just in case things might come tumbling out?  Baseball bats, games, wrapping paper, boxes of paper swept from the table and even coats might be squeezed in there.  Fear no more, you CAN cut closet clutter easily!

The nice thing about a coat closet is the size.  It usually isn’t very big so it can be tackled in just one decluttering session.  If you truly feel overwhelmed or have very little time or energy for your project, you can even break the closet down  into sections and do a little at a time.  You can start with the top shelf, move to the clothing bar and then on down to the floor.

Follow these four organizing tips to cut clutter from your own coat closet:

Organizing Tip #1:  Decide what you want to store in your closet.  It has to be reasonable because this is a small space.  Once you know what you want to store, it will make it easier to make decisions about what needs to leave the closet for good.  Some things you may want to keep:  Coats (novel), games, hook for purse, vacuum cleaner, shoes, baskets with hats & gloves.

Organizing Tip #2:  Decide if you are going to tackle the whole closet or one area each organizing session.

Organizing Tip #3:  Choose a date & time and go for it!

Organizing Tip #4:  Get a boxes or bags to have close by while you are working and label them.  Common labels:  Garbage, Donation, Recycle.

Organizing Tip #5:  Make firm decisions one at a time for each item in the closet.  Is it for the garbage?  Is it to be donated?  Is it for the recycle bin?  Does it need to be moved to another area of your home?  Does it need to stay in the closet because it fits with your goals for what you would like to store in the closet?

Once you have cleared your closet of everything that should be removed, make sure that the items you keep have ‘homes’ such as gloves and hats in baskets so they are easy to round up and find again.  Tackle that coat closet today and show it who’s boss-you are!

cluttered closet

cluttered closet

Picture standing in front of your closet looking at:

1)  Hangers of all different types mixed up (wire, plastic, tubular)

2) Clothes spilling onto the floor

3) Clothes all mixed up:  shirts, pants, skirts all willy nilly

4)  Heaps of shoes

5) All seasons of clothing mixed together

6) The right sizes, the wrong sizes, sizes from 10 years ago…

Sound familiar?

How’s a girl to pull together a cute outfit without starting the day in a fit of stress?  And who needs a fit of stress first thing in the morning?  Not me, I’m grumpy enough already!   Here are 5 DIY organization tips to reclaim your closet:

1)  Put clothing of the same type together and see just how much you have.  Put all the shirts together, all the jeans together, all the pants together and then let go of the extras.  When you see just how much you have it makes it easier to let some go!

2)  Remove clothes from the closet that don’t fit.  You really should be able to reach into your closet and wear anything that is there.  If you are really close to fitting back into a smaller size, then place those clothes together in one area of your closet.  It’s even better if you can remove the clothing that doesn’t fit to another closet or under bed storage.

3)  Let go of clothing that is stained, sloppy, damaged-go out looking good, not sloppy!

4) Let go of clothing that you aren’t wearing, you won’t miss it because you aren’t wearing it!  If it doesn’t fit right, is uncomfortable, looks bad on you, whatever it is-let it go!

5) After you downsize, place all of your clothing on matching hanger and be sure to get rid of unsightly wire hangers.  It really is amazing how much less cluttered the closet looks with matching hangers.

Thank you to Janet for requesting a post on organizing her husband’s baseball caps!  I have to come up with a lot of ideas for DIY Organization, so I love getting suggestions for topics that I wouldn’t think of on my own.  Everyone, please feel free to ask me to write on a specific issue you are having! :)

OK, I found some great baseball cap products out there!  What I would recommend before buying anything:

1)  Get all the baseball caps together in one place so you can see the true volume of how much you have.

2)  Make decisions on what you truly want to keep and what you are ready to send to donation (or possibly garbage-just sayin’).

3)  Now that you know how much you have left, you can purchase what you need to store them.

If you have special caps that are only for display, consider displaying them on floating shelves!  You can also use wire or wood shelves around the top of your closet if you don’t want to have them displayed for all to see:

Closet Organizing Tip

Some of the hangers are the wrong direction!  This is the ultimate visual trick to determine whether you are truly wearing what you have or not.  Take all of your clothing and hang the hangers the wrong direction in your closet.  Anytime you wear an item, wash it and hang it back up the correct way in your closet.  At the end of the season, scan your closet and take a look at all of the clothing that hasn’t been turned the correct way.  This means you passed over these items every single time that you got dressed!  This is a good indicator that you aren’t going to wear them and it’s time to donate them to someone who will enjoy them.

Organize your closet easily with this handy dandy little trick, it works every time!

It doesn’t have to take a major overhaul or major money to make a major difference when organizing your closet-yeah!  This is what was done with this closet organizing project…

A worn out old dresser was removed from a long wall in the closet.  It was taking up a large amount of wall space with lots of wasted space above the dresser.

There were wire shelves already available in the closet with random items placed on them.  These items were moved to higher shelves since they didn’t need to be accessed as often.  This opened up space for organizing baskets of various sizes to house the clothing that had been in the dresser.  The baskets are from Target for under $100.

Now the wall where the dresser used to sit is a blank canvas for future storage shelves to be added!  Be sure to purge any clothing you are no longer using before purchasing closet organizing products to make sure that you have just the right size and amount which will save you money!

Closet Doubler Closet Organizer from OrganizedAtoZ.com

Closet Doubler Closet Organizer from OrganizedAtoZ.comy

My final closet organizing pick is the closet doubler for under $15-easy, peasy!  So many of us have too little closet space or wasted space that could be utilized.  This is an inexpensive way to double your space, creating two rows of clothing storage.  And it installs simply by hanging over your existing closet rod.  Not only should you take advantage of wasted space to increase storage, you should also make sure you are creating space by decreasing your clothing volume.  Make sure you part with clothing that is:

  • Uncomfortable
  • Doesn’t fit properly
  • Doesn’t make you feel your best
  • Is too big or too small
  • Is out of style

I think it is so important for all of us to be able to reach into our closets and know that we will look great and feel great in anything we have there.  Declutter your closet and increase your storage space!  You can read about when I kicked my clothes to the curb with this link.

Underbed Storage from Storables

Underbed Storage from Storables

Closet organizing product #4:  underbed storage bins!  Make it appear that your stuff is supposed to be shoved under the bed by giving your belongings a bin!  Really, utilizing the space under your bed is a great way to maximize your storage space.  Using a bin such as this one, or one with wheels, will allow you to stow away items you don’t need to get your hands on all the time and slide it out when you do.  The lid will help protect your belongings from dust.  Some things you can consider storing under the bed:

  • Extra linens such as sheets or blankets
  • Out of season shoes
  • Keepsakes
  • Out of season clothing
  • Toys
  • Dress up clothes for kids

I have one under my bed that has baby blankets and childhood keepsake books for my kids.  My daughter has one under her bed with toys that she occasionally pulls out to play with.  Slide a couple of storage bins under your bed to maximize your clothing storage or any other storage needs.

Stackable Shoe Organizing Shelf from OrganizedAtoZ.com

Stackable Shoe Organizing Shelf from OrganizedAtoZ.com

This is a about as simple as a DIY Organization project can get, set a shoe rack in your closet or next to your front door!  Quick, easy and affordable too.  I like using a simple shoe rack because it is one of the easiest ways to store your shoes and see your shoes as well.  I think shoe trees look great, but you have to really think about making it as easy as possible for you and your family to use your organizing product.  Are you really going to take off and hang up each shoe individually?  If you are, great, a shoe tree will work for you.  I prefer to use flat shelves such as this one or even big baskets that shoes can be kicked into, preferably with a lid.  Whatever keeps the shoes in one place where everyone in the family knows how to find them.

Installing the shoe rack will be easy, deciding if you truly need all of your shoes, that might be a bit more difficult!   Make sure you are only keeping shoes that you know you wear, feel comfortable & look great-sometimes shoes can’t do both of those things-I understand. :) If you have an expensive pair of shoes that really didn’t work out, it’s OK to let them go.  Make room for shoes you love!
