Ahhh, the linen closet, an easy area of our home to toss, shut the door and dash in a flash. I’ve recently had someone ask me for tips on how to organize your linen closet, so I’ve compiled some easy organizing tip to follow to get a handle on this closet that we depend on daily.
Most linen closets are going to hold:
- Sheets
- Extra blankets
- Towels & washcloths
- Beach towels
- Random stuff you don’t know where else to store. This may include humidifiers, sleeping bags, foot massagers and many other items.
So, let’s hit my top 10 organizing tips:
Organizing Tip #1: Decide what you want to store in your linen closet. If things are falling out, maybe you need to move the humidifier elsewhere. Make a list of what must go in the closet, take care of those items first and then see if you have room for the randoms.
Organizing Tip #2: Decide how much time you have to devote to the closet. Figure out if you can tackle the whole closet in one day or if you want to break it down to one shelf each day.
Organizing Tip #3: Create a staging area. Use a nearby bed, floor or folding table to place items that come out of the linen closet so you can see what you’ve got.
Organizing Tip #4: Place items of the same type together. This will allow you to see how much you have of each item. Place sheets with sheets, beach towels with beach towels, washcloths with washcloths, etc.
Organizing Tip #5: Purge, purge, purge. Pick the best and let go of the rest. Part with sheet sets that have part of the set missing, part with ripped and stained towels, part with extra blankets that you never use. Blankets will be much appreciated at a local mission and towels at your local humane society.
Organizing Tip #6: Store “like” items together. Place the items that you are keeping together in one area just as if you were shopping at the store. All the sheets together, all the towels together, etc.
Organizing Tip #7: Create sheet “sets” by placing the set inside the matching pillowcase.
Organizing Tip #8: Use organizing products to help you separate & stay organized.
Organizing Tip #9: Place the “random” items back in the linen closet if there’s comfortably room for them. If not, it’s time to donate them or find another area to store them in.
Organizing Tip #10: Take 10 for tune-ups. Once you have a system in place, it’s easier to maintain order. But we still get busy sometimes and kinda toss things in. Be sure to take 10 minutes from time-to-time to freshen up, part with more stuff and restore order.

Are you passing clothing down from one of your children to another or maybe someone else is passing their child’s clothing down to yours? This is an awesome thing when you can get a second use (or perhaps a third) from perfectly good clothes! My girls were born during the same season three years apart and I just loved being able to use the same clothes twice. But what are you supposed to do with all of the clothes during the “in between” when you are waiting for your child to fit into them?
Here are 10 tips to store baby & kids clothes for the future so you can keep them organized & in good shape:
- Make sure clothing is clean, dry and stain-free before storing.
- Store clothing in a sturdy container with a lid to keep out dust and critters.
- Store in a cool, dry place.
- Avoid storing clothing in an area that is subject to temperature and moisture fluctuations. It’s probably best to avoid attics and garages. Instead, find a place where you can add a shelf up high (laundry room or closet) and store bins there.
- Add an all-natural cedar block to help eliminate unwanted pests.
- Add a chemical desiccant to absorb moisture, just make sure you don’t let it touch the clothes. Tape it to the inside of the lid perhaps?
- Store clothing loosely so air can circulate a bit.
- Store clothing by size & season and be sure to label the outside of the bin so you can zero in on sizes quickly. Examples: Size 12 months Spring/Summer, Size 2 T Fall/Winter, Size 2 T Spring/Summer.
- Be sure to pull the bin down when you child is ready for the next size so you can go through it to see what fits and what doesn’t. You may have to try some items on your child for size.
- Do your best and realize that there may be a few items that slip through the cracks depending on how your child is growing and how the seasons fall. After clothes are washed multiple times, sometimes it’s just a little harder to judge the sizing as well. Just do your best to place items that look like the same size together. If your child misses out on wearing some items, you can pass them along to someone else.
If you have room to store clothing in a closet on hangers instead of in boxes, here’s a neat product from Baby Buddy, the “Size It” Closet Organizer.
Just think how nice it will be when you have kids clothing at your fingertips and you won’t have to spend money running out and buying new clothes! For a secret on how to remember which clothes belong to which child when it comes out of the laundry, please read my past children’s closet organizing post.

Awwwww, now don’t make your closet cry… make your closet happy-an organized closet is a happy closet!
An organized closet also makes for a happy woman when she can pull off a cute outfit and get ready for the day on time-winner!
Organizing your closet doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Follow a few closet organizing tips and consider adding a few organizing products to conquer closet clutter.
Closet Organizing Tip #1: Purge, purge, purge. Let go of clothing that you aren’t wearing, that doesn’t fit, that doesn’t look good on you or that’s out of style. If that leaves your closet bare, that’s OK, you weren’t wearing these items anyway so go ahead and open up space for new clothes that you love.
Closet Organizing Tip #2: Store clothing that doesn’t fit elsewhere. Make sure you can wear anything in your closet right now. You can store future sizes under the bed or in another closet. If you don’t have that kind of space, then dedicate one section of your closet just for the clothing you plan to fit in soon. If it’s not going to be soon, then consider letting it go.
Closet Organizing Tip #3: Place your hangers the wrong direction, make the hanger face you instead of away from you. When you wear something and hang it back up, hang it the correct direction. At the end of the season, turn and look at all of the hangers that are still the wrong direction, this means you never chose these items to wear. Let them go.
Once you’ve gotten your closet down to the items that fit, feel good and look good, you can stretch your space by adding these must-have items from Organized A to Z.
And to help you in the right direction, here are 5 DIY Organization tips to help you reclaim your closet!

Why is it that it’s so easy to put off the things that we think we ‘should‘ be doing? It might be losing weight, it might be exercising and of course my focus here today is on getting our home organization projects done. We walk past the piles, we feel the stress, we want to make a change, but the piles still sit there taunting us. Well, there’s no time like the present and as Nike would say, “Just do it!”
It’s time to put away the excuses, time to stop putting off until tomorrow what you can do today. I just read a short article in ‘Shape’ magazine with the headline: “Right now is the Perfect Time.” So I say it’s time to get organized! Who’s with me?
The article states that you should decide to take action right away even if you take baby steps to get there. Let’s say you want to organize your closet, then start by just writing down your criteria for the clothing items need to leave-such as clothes that don’t fit or stained items, then be done for the day. The next day you can bring in bags or boxes for garbage and donation, then be done for the day. The next day you could purge one side of your closet, then be done for the day. You get the picture!
Stop putting off your organizing projects by taking manageable steps that will give you the boost to keep on going so your stuff won’t taunt you anymore; you can do it!!

organized coat closet
Are you nervous when you open your coat closet? Do you have to put your hands up to ‘protect the face’ just in case things might come tumbling out? Baseball bats, games, wrapping paper, boxes of paper swept from the table and even coats might be squeezed in there. Fear no more, you CAN cut closet clutter easily!
The nice thing about a coat closet is the size. It usually isn’t very big so it can be tackled in just one decluttering session. If you truly feel overwhelmed or have very little time or energy for your project, you can even break the closet down into sections and do a little at a time. You can start with the top shelf, move to the clothing bar and then on down to the floor.
Follow these four organizing tips to cut clutter from your own coat closet:
Organizing Tip #1: Decide what you want to store in your closet. It has to be reasonable because this is a small space. Once you know what you want to store, it will make it easier to make decisions about what needs to leave the closet for good. Some things you may want to keep: Coats (novel), games, hook for purse, vacuum cleaner, shoes, baskets with hats & gloves.
Organizing Tip #2: Decide if you are going to tackle the whole closet or one area each organizing session.
Organizing Tip #3: Choose a date & time and go for it!
Organizing Tip #4: Get a boxes or bags to have close by while you are working and label them. Common labels: Garbage, Donation, Recycle.
Organizing Tip #5: Make firm decisions one at a time for each item in the closet. Is it for the garbage? Is it to be donated? Is it for the recycle bin? Does it need to be moved to another area of your home? Does it need to stay in the closet because it fits with your goals for what you would like to store in the closet?
Once you have cleared your closet of everything that should be removed, make sure that the items you keep have ‘homes’ such as gloves and hats in baskets so they are easy to round up and find again. Tackle that coat closet today and show it who’s boss-you are!

cluttered closet
Picture standing in front of your closet looking at:
1) Hangers of all different types mixed up (wire, plastic, tubular)
2) Clothes spilling onto the floor
3) Clothes all mixed up: shirts, pants, skirts all willy nilly
4) Heaps of shoes
5) All seasons of clothing mixed together
6) The right sizes, the wrong sizes, sizes from 10 years ago…
Sound familiar?
How’s a girl to pull together a cute outfit without starting the day in a fit of stress? And who needs a fit of stress first thing in the morning? Not me, I’m grumpy enough already! Here are 5 DIY organization tips to reclaim your closet:
1) Put clothing of the same type together and see just how much you have. Put all the shirts together, all the jeans together, all the pants together and then let go of the extras. When you see just how much you have it makes it easier to let some go!
2) Remove clothes from the closet that don’t fit. You really should be able to reach into your closet and wear anything that is there. If you are really close to fitting back into a smaller size, then place those clothes together in one area of your closet. It’s even better if you can remove the clothing that doesn’t fit to another closet or under bed storage.
3) Let go of clothing that is stained, sloppy, damaged-go out looking good, not sloppy!
4) Let go of clothing that you aren’t wearing, you won’t miss it because you aren’t wearing it! If it doesn’t fit right, is uncomfortable, looks bad on you, whatever it is-let it go!
5) After you downsize, place all of your clothing on matching hanger and be sure to get rid of unsightly wire hangers. It really is amazing how much less cluttered the closet looks with matching hangers.

Thank you to Janet for requesting a post on organizing her husband’s baseball caps! I have to come up with a lot of ideas for DIY Organization, so I love getting suggestions for topics that I wouldn’t think of on my own. Everyone, please feel free to ask me to write on a specific issue you are having!
OK, I found some great baseball cap products out there! What I would recommend before buying anything:
1) Get all the baseball caps together in one place so you can see the true volume of how much you have.
2) Make decisions on what you truly want to keep and what you are ready to send to donation (or possibly garbage-just sayin’).
3) Now that you know how much you have left, you can purchase what you need to store them.
If you have special caps that are only for display, consider displaying them on floating shelves! You can also use wire or wood shelves around the top of your closet if you don’t want to have them displayed for all to see:

Closet Organizing Tip
Some of the hangers are the wrong direction! This is the ultimate visual trick to determine whether you are truly wearing what you have or not. Take all of your clothing and hang the hangers the wrong direction in your closet. Anytime you wear an item, wash it and hang it back up the correct way in your closet. At the end of the season, scan your closet and take a look at all of the clothing that hasn’t been turned the correct way. This means you passed over these items every single time that you got dressed! This is a good indicator that you aren’t going to wear them and it’s time to donate them to someone who will enjoy them.
Organize your closet easily with this handy dandy little trick, it works every time!

It doesn’t have to take a major overhaul or major money to make a major difference when organizing your closet-yeah! This is what was done with this closet organizing project…
A worn out old dresser was removed from a long wall in the closet. It was taking up a large amount of wall space with lots of wasted space above the dresser.
There were wire shelves already available in the closet with random items placed on them. These items were moved to higher shelves since they didn’t need to be accessed as often. This opened up space for organizing baskets of various sizes to house the clothing that had been in the dresser. The baskets are from Target for under $100.

Now the wall where the dresser used to sit is a blank canvas for future storage shelves to be added! Be sure to purge any clothing you are no longer using before purchasing closet organizing products to make sure that you have just the right size and amount which will save you money!
