Closet Doubler Closet Organizer from OrganizedAtoZ.com

Closet Doubler Closet Organizer from OrganizedAtoZ.comy

My final closet organizing pick is the closet doubler for under $15-easy, peasy!  So many of us have too little closet space or wasted space that could be utilized.  This is an inexpensive way to double your space, creating two rows of clothing storage.  And it installs simply by hanging over your existing closet rod.  Not only should you take advantage of wasted space to increase storage, you should also make sure you are creating space by decreasing your clothing volume.  Make sure you part with clothing that is:

  • Uncomfortable
  • Doesn’t fit properly
  • Doesn’t make you feel your best
  • Is too big or too small
  • Is out of style

I think it is so important for all of us to be able to reach into our closets and know that we will look great and feel great in anything we have there.  Declutter your closet and increase your storage space!  You can read about when I kicked my clothes to the curb with this link.

Underbed Storage from Storables

Underbed Storage from Storables

Closet organizing product #4:  underbed storage bins!  Make it appear that your stuff is supposed to be shoved under the bed by giving your belongings a bin!  Really, utilizing the space under your bed is a great way to maximize your storage space.  Using a bin such as this one, or one with wheels, will allow you to stow away items you don’t need to get your hands on all the time and slide it out when you do.  The lid will help protect your belongings from dust.  Some things you can consider storing under the bed:

  • Extra linens such as sheets or blankets
  • Out of season shoes
  • Keepsakes
  • Out of season clothing
  • Toys
  • Dress up clothes for kids

I have one under my bed that has baby blankets and childhood keepsake books for my kids.  My daughter has one under her bed with toys that she occasionally pulls out to play with.  Slide a couple of storage bins under your bed to maximize your clothing storage or any other storage needs.

Stackable Shoe Organizing Shelf from OrganizedAtoZ.com

Stackable Shoe Organizing Shelf from OrganizedAtoZ.com

This is a about as simple as a DIY Organization project can get, set a shoe rack in your closet or next to your front door!  Quick, easy and affordable too.  I like using a simple shoe rack because it is one of the easiest ways to store your shoes and see your shoes as well.  I think shoe trees look great, but you have to really think about making it as easy as possible for you and your family to use your organizing product.  Are you really going to take off and hang up each shoe individually?  If you are, great, a shoe tree will work for you.  I prefer to use flat shelves such as this one or even big baskets that shoes can be kicked into, preferably with a lid.  Whatever keeps the shoes in one place where everyone in the family knows how to find them.

Installing the shoe rack will be easy, deciding if you truly need all of your shoes, that might be a bit more difficult!   Make sure you are only keeping shoes that you know you wear, feel comfortable & look great-sometimes shoes can’t do both of those things-I understand. :) If you have an expensive pair of shoes that really didn’t work out, it’s OK to let them go.  Make room for shoes you love!

Drawer Organizing Dividers from OrganizedAtoZ.com

Drawer Organizing Dividers from OrganizedAtoZ.com

I have found using drawer dividers in dressers to be so beneficial  in my house, especially for my kids.  I’ve also had a client use them in her kitchen, which worked out great in a deeper drawer!  I like these dividers because they separate your belongings so you don’t end up with piles to dig through in your drawers.  They also make a clear separation between different types of clothing.  You can separate bras from underwear and socks.   There are other drawer organizers out there that have individual sections to place each bra in it’s own section or each pair of socks.  It’s all a matter of personal preference, but for me that is overkill.  I don’t want to take the time to place each pair of socks in in it’s own home.  As long as I have a sock “section” and I can find my socks, then it’s all good!

This is an easy item to install for a DIY Organization clothing organizing session!

Organizing Belt Hanger from Storables

Organizing Belt Hanger from Storables

I love using a belt hanger in my own closet and suggest them for everyone who owns a few belts.  This is a great way to keep belts from getting tangled in a basket and it prevents you from having to dig through your belts to find the one you want in the morning.  It also keeps belts out of drawers and off of floors.  It hangs on your clothing rod just like a regular hanger and takes up very little space and also places belts at eye level.  These handy little numbers hold 12 belts total, six on each side.

Untangle your belts and get ready much faster in the morning with this affordable closet organizing product!

So, how did I end up with this kicky little black summer dress after my closet clean out?  You may have read my last blog post about the day the new jammies came home to live and the unused and unloved clothes had to pack up and go.  But where did they go?  First, I started out with a big pile on my closet floor as I tried clothes on and found out which ones weren’t working out.

Even though I am apparently so not cool, my oldest child gave me the benefit of the doubt that I might have some things she might like to wear.  So, a few things were passed on to her.  Maybe I do have a little bit of cool in there somewhere; naw, I’m sure she’ll never admit to it.  A large majority of items went into a big, black bag for a future donation drop off.  Then, there were a few select or name brand pieces that I thought I should at least have a local consignment shop give a go at.  So, I hung those items back up on hangers and headed to the consignment shop in the next town over.

Right away I spotted some cute earrings and then, well, I love dresses!  So, I thumbed through the dress rack and had a handful of items to try on.  By the time I was done, I had credit for a few of my items which I used toward a skirt, those cute earrings and the above sassy little dress.  The rest of the items that were not accepted, I just left with the store owner for her to donate.  So, was that ok for me to bring new items back home?  Of course!  I organized my closet and parted with way more items then I brought in; it’s all good!

the sock drawer, the sock drawer is connected to the shirts, the shirts are connected to the jeans….That’s what happened the day I unintentionally kicked off a closet decluttering session after a recent shopping trip.  It started out innocently enough, I just needed some new jammies.  I was wearing the same pair of Aeropostale pj pants over and over-enough already, comfy or not!  So I excitedly came home to load up my dresser drawer with my new goods.  To make room, I needed to let go of the old pajamas that I wasn’t wearing.  Why keep them if they weren’t being used and enjoyed; am I right?  Yes, I’m right.

So, once I finished the jammie drawer, I moved on over to the shirts and on through every article of clothing, coats, shoes that I own.  I was honest about what I really wanted, liked and needed.  Did it have a stain I was overlooking?  Out.  Was it too small?  Out.  Did I ever really wear it?  Out.  Was the zipper broken?  Out.  I tried things on too-that’s a great way to really confirm whether or not you like the way something looks and feels on you.

So, now I feel like I hardly have any long  sleeve shirts left.  But the way I see it, why have long sleeve shirts hanging there just to hang there if I’m not going to wear them anyway?  I will just wait and deal with adding a few new pieces next fall when it starts getting chilly again.  It feels good to declutter your closet because you will feel good about any of the choices you have left in there each morning !  Find out what I did next, coming soon…..

March 15th, 2010 Closet Organizing Decluttering

100_4156

Home organization means sometimes you have to declutter, you have to let some things go.  Take the above shoes.  Those were in my closet, but they aren’t anymore!  Just like other people who hold onto their belongings, I was holding onto them because I ‘might’ wear them ‘someday.’  I’ve really moved into much higher heels recently as I wear a lot of dresses (dresses are nice and forgiving!) and I’m on the shorter side.  But I kept holding onto these shoes because I thought I might wear them to a consultation someday.  Of course I always passed them over every time I got dressed, consultation or not.

I finally decided to give it up and realize that I wasn’t wearing them and I wasn’t going to wear them.  And while I was at it, I parted with really cute shoes I had recently purchased at a consignment shop.  Now I know why someone else got rid of them-they hurt!  Cute or not, it doesn’t make sense to walk around in pain all day.  There are more cute shoes out there to be had!  I actually parted with several pairs of shoes that day.  I really don’t have a ton of shoes, but I want the ones that I am keeping to be shoes that serve me as both cute and comfortable.

So when you are looking at your belongings or your clothes, really be honest about whether you are currently using them or not.  Don’t just hold onto things because you might use them someday.  You are either using them or you’re not.  Stay on top of home organization by letting go when you need to!

If you have kids that are able to pass clothing down to each other, it’s a double edged sword.  Great that you can get further use from them, but it also creates some organizing issues.  First, how to store the hand-me-downs and then how to remember who the clothing belongs to when you do the laundry.   Follow these easy closet organizing tips and keep your kid’s closets in tip top shape!

  • Make sure the clothing that you plan to save truly is in good condition and you will feel good about your younger child wearing the items in the future.
  • Part with torn and stained clothing that doesn’t make the mark right away.

Clothing Storage:  Store future clothing in bins that have tight fitting lids.  Be sure to clearly label the outside with the child’s name, size and season on the outside.

Store the bins out of the way in the child’s closet or some other part of the home where they are accessible.  We store ours out in the garage on a shelf.

Keeping tracking of clothing:  When it comes time for laundry day, sometimes it gets confusing when you see clothes you remember, especially if your kids aren’t too far apart in age and size.  How did you make sure the right child gets the right clothing?

Invest in a Sharpie Laundry marker!  The first child gets one dot with the marker on their clothing tag.  When it gets passed down to the next child you add a second dot.  It makes it easy to know who owns what!

Follow these tips for easy closet organizing and get the most out of your children’s clothes and enjoy organized closets!
