Not everything you have in your home has to be at your fingertips at all times. As a matter of fact, if you have everything out and close to you at all times, chances are your space will look crowded and cluttered and it will be harder to find what you need when you need it.
But we should keep items that we use every day closest to where we use them and at our fingertips. Examples in my own home:
1) I keep lunch sacks in the cupboard closest to where I pack lunches.
2) I keep flossers for my kids in the top drawer in the bathroom close at hand.
3) In my office I keep pens, pencils and paper clips in a drawer organizer right next to where I sit and work on the computer.
Storing these items closest to where I use them improves my efficiency.
But we all have items in our homes that don’t have to be stored right at our fingertips and to improve home organization, they can be stored higher, lower or further away. To do this, you can use wall shelves, wall units, closet shelves, under bed storage or any other area you can think of to stretch your space and tuck things away.
Here are 7 items in your home that you can store a little further ‘up and away’:
1) Holiday dishes: They can go up to the top shelf in a kitchen cupboard or even be stored out in the garage in your holiday bins.
2) Infrequently used serving dishes: They can also go up to a top shelf, a bottom cupboard that forces you go get down on your knees to get to them or in that black hole that some cupboards have that go way back.
3) Infrequently used small kitchen appliances: First, make sure you really are going to use them again. If you haven’t used your juicer in 5 years, you should consider letting it go. But for items you just use once in a while, consider storing them up high or down low in the pantry or in a cupboard that isn’t as easy to access in the kitchen.
4) Food stockpiles: If you’re a couponer or you just like to have a lot of backup items on hand, keep the foods you are currently eating, such as crackers and cereal, down low and easily accessible. The backups can be stored at the top of the pantry or in a garage pantry to restock as you run out. For 6 organizing tips for your couponing stockpile, please read more here.
5) Paper product stockpiles: I have a house full of girls and I feel best when the toilet paper is stocked! Place extra toilet paper and paper towels in a closet or on a shelf in the laundry room. There is often space to move the shelf in the laundry room down and add a higher shelf above it for stockpile items.
6) Extra office supplies: Use a shelf in the closet or add a shelf on the wall in your office to store extra supplies such as pens, pencils, envelopes and computer paper. Make sure you have a good supply right next to where you work and use this backup to restock. You can hide extra supplies in decorative boxes for a touch of pretty.
7) Reference books & magazines: An extra shelf or wall unit in your office is a great tool for keeping these resources out of your immediate workspace but still accessible when you need them.
Look around your own home and see what other items you can store a little further away so you can keep the things that you truly need close by right at your fingertips.

The holidays are an interesting time of year. It’s the time of year where we are accumulating even more stuff through gift exchanges while also thinking about “getting organized” with new year’s resolutions right around the corner. Of course getting more stuff can make getting organized even more of a challenge! So, if you’re tripping over stuff and would like to use your table and counters once again, try these 5 ways to kick clutter out of your home!
Clutter Kicker #1: Find a charity that you can feel awesome donating your belongings to. It will make it easier to let go of your stuff if you know it’s going to a cause that is dear to your heart. One time, I had a client who had worked at a Montessori school, so we decided that’s where she should donate her children’s old dress-up clothes, it was a win/win.
Clutter Kicker #2: Make time to go through your stuff. You don’t have to wipe out a whole weekend to do it, even tackling one area 15 minutes a day will make a difference! Schedule decluttering time right into your calendar as an appointment or be accountable to a friend by scheduling time to work together. Remember, this is not the time to bring in new stuff though or it will be harder to get ahead.
Clutter Kicker #3: Make quick decisions on what to keep and what to let go, go with your gut. If you don’t use it-out. If you don’t like it-out. If it’s broken-out. If you have too many-out. If it’s no longer relevent-out. If it doesn’t fit-out. Make sure you keep the things that you really use and enjoy. Isn’t hat what you would rather surround yourself with in your home?
Clutter Kicker #4: Stop bringing more stuff in, stop it before it starts! If you’re working on having less stuff, this is a good time to avoid temptations by not shopping, by looking the other way past sales and by driving right past garage sales.
Clutter Kicker #5: Ask others to stop giving you gifts and start giving you activities or services instead. Rather than a gift for your birthday, spend time together going for lunch, coffee or ice cream. For 20 clutter free gift ideas, please read more right here.
Kick clutter to the curb and say, ‘bye, bye clutter!’

Monday Mantra for Women: “I will take the time to write down 2-3 goals that I would like to accomplish so I don’t try to make too many changes at once. I will make sure my goals are achievable and have meaning to me so I will feel amazing when I reach them.”

Dress up days in my house are long-over, but recently a good friend called me asking about dress up clothing storage as a gift for her two nieces. She had something very specific in mind that she was on the hunt for: a plastic storage container so she could paint a design on the outside and it had to have a hinged lid. It was the hinged lid that made it tricky because all bins I’ve seen have a separate lid. So, I was up for the challenge! In doing my research, I came across a variety of ideas that could work for storing storing dress up clothes so I thought I would share my favorites.
In general, I do not like toy box type storage as it turns into a black hole, but I do think it’s OK to use large bins for storing one type of item vs. a bunch of different toys. So, here are my top 4 and the links to the sites should you want one of your very own.
Kroom Storage Trunk through Amazon

KidKraft Storage Unit through OneStepAhead

DIY Dress Up Option from the site: ohdeedoh
The the final one that was plastic AND a hinged lid….

Woot woot for Organize.com
So there you have it, if you have play dress up clothes for your kids, you’ve now got some solutions! Easy access to hours of dress up fun!

Recently I had my own “Maybe” that I had to kick to the curb. What was it? A crock pot. I dropped the insert, which was so thick and sharp when it broke, I was lucky it didn’t scratch my kitchen floor. But I digress. So, I looked at the nice, glass lid and thought, “Maybe, I should keep this in case it happens to fit on the next crock pot that I buy. That way, if I break the next lid, then I’ll have an extra!”
Hmmmm, it happens to the best of us, the “maybes.” But maybes won’t help you stay on top of your home organization projects. Maybes will keep you swimming in clutter. Maybes may come in these clever disguises:
- Maybe I will use that again “someday.” “Someday is a trap too-do not get seduced and fall for “someday.”
- Maybe my kids will want that.
- Maybe that’s worth something, maybe I can make a lot of money. Probably not, but if so, then sell it.
- Maybe I’ll fix that ‘someday.” Oh that ‘someday’ is a sneaky devil.
- Maybe we’ll have a garage sale. Oh snap-”someday!”
- Maybe I will fit into that again. Oh I’m embarrassed to say it now-”someday.”
- Maybe I’ll get that car running again.
- Maybe we’ll run out of all the beauty products we like to use and we’ll have to use this.
- Maybe one will break and we’ll need these extras.
- Maybe the gift giver will ask me if I still have this.
- Maybe I will miss it if it’s gone.
- Maybe I will regret getting rid of it.
- Maybe I will need this, oh you know what’s coming now: “someday.”
No more “maybe” baby! And kick out seductive “someday” too; you don’t need those guys!
But really, don’t keep things because of a maybe or a someday, keep the things in your home that you love or that you at least like and that you are truly using. Keep space open for new things that may come into your life. It really is OK to just have open space too-breathing room is awesome! For tips on 20 easy things to toss to get your started, I got your back right here sister!

Being organized doesn’t have to be a dream, it can be your reality! I know, I know, you’re a busy mom with a long to-do list and getting organized is just one more task. But home organization projects can be manageable and they can be achieved in small chunks. Yeah for breaking this down and not getting overwhelmed-woot woot!
Incorporate these 5 easy organizing tips in your home so you can get organized:
1) Create a “Catch It” station to make it easy to drop things when you walk in the door and then find them again. Face it, you’re tired and the natural inclination is to drop stuff, usually on the kitchen counter. Instead, create a station by the door where your keys go every single time. This is also a great place to create space for your purse/briefcase, glasses, cell phone and the mail.
2) Keep a bag or box tucked in a closet or under a table for donations at all times. Teach your family to drop items in that they are no longer using or wearing. This will keep items moving out of the house on a regular basis without requiring a major purge.
3) Declutter your home so you don’t have to wade through stuff you don’t use to get to the stuff you do use. Chances are good this will be a longer project, but again, you can break it down and do a little at a time. For more on how to declutter your home without feeling overwhelmed, please read more here.
4) Give all items in your home a place or “home” that is obvious to all who live there, labels never hurt! This will help everyone know where things go, no excuses that they don’t know where to put something!
5) It sounds obvious, but if you get it out, put it away. Get your family in the habit of working together for 5 minutes every evening to put everything back that they got out or were working on earlier in the day. Pitching in to work together will make it go faster and seem easier than one person taking everything on themselves-ahem-Mom.

Monday Mantra for Women: “I will acknowledge that not every holiday has to be a carbon copy of the previous holiday. What I can do from year to year may change due to life circumstances. And that’s OK.”
