Here we go, we’ll just jump right into part 2 with awesome places to store your stuff that make sense!

Laundry Room

1)  Keep a supply caddy filled with cleaning supplies up high, away from kids and pets.  This also makes your cleaning supplies mobile.

2) This is a great place to store extra clothing hangers.

3) Use turntables for sprays and cleaning sticks, just spin and grab what you need so nothing falls over.

4) Store your iron and ironing board on the wall or door to save space

5) A drying rack on the wall that pulls out will be out of your way when you don’t need it

Keepsakes

1)  Use an archival-safe box in a closet or on a shelf.  Avoid the garage due to humidity, heat, cold.

Backpacks/Coats

1) Hooks or cubbies by door you leave from.  Make it easy for kids to succeed by placing them at their level.

Dining Room

1) Stash place mats, napkins, napkin rings, candles close to the table so it’s easy to set for your family or for company.

Family room

1) Items for activities you do in this room: books, music, dvds, board games & throw blankets

Garage

1)  Place paint & paint supplies all in one area

2)  Store tools together so it’s easy to work on projects & repairs

3) Store camping gear and supplies in one section

4) Keep holiday decor safely stored in labeled bins

5) Keep sports equipment together so you can grab them and go when it’s time to have some fun

Make sure that you store items that you use the most in a way that is more easily accessible and items that don’t aren’t needed as often can be stored higher or lower so you have to work a little harder.  For tips on what you can toss before you begin looking for storage solutions, please read more right here.

August 12th, 2011 Laundry Room Organizing

img_06111

Once upon a time, there was a happy homemaker who was no longer very happy.  She worked and worked to create home organization systems that would create  peace and harmony for all those who lived in her home.   She used baskets and labels, she used colorful file folders, sturdy file baskets and snazzy label makers too.  She was doing great, she was feeling good, she could find anything she needed and then without warning  the complaining began..   “Mom, I don’t have any matching socks,”  “Mom, where are all my socks?”  “Mom, have you done the laundry, I can’t find my socks.”  At first she felt puzzled.  Then she felt frustrated.  And then she looked into the laundry basket and gasped, only one sock out of every pair…  How could this be, what went wrong and WHERE are the socks??  Her organizing instincts were forced to kick into high gear, she knew there had to be a better way.  How could this homemaker be happy once again?

She pounded the pavement, she asked her friends,  she took to the internet and that’s where she found it:  The Sock Sack

Brilliant!  Every family member could have their own color coded bag-marvelous!  Dirty socks could go in, zip up the bag, throw it in the washing machine and like magic, they would come out not only clean, but as a pair.  Two clean, matching socks-fabulous!

The homemaker sighed with relief for tackling this home organization hurdle and coming out successful and she lived happily ever after!

Iron and Board Holder from Storables

Iron and Board Holder from Storables

I love this one too!  I use an iron and board holder on my wall in my laundry closet next to my dryer.  It’s a bit of a tight squeeze getting it in and out, but since I don’t like to iron, I don’t have to do it all the time! :)   The great thing about this organizing product is it holds two items at once, both your iron and your ironing board.   If you don’t want to hang something like this on a wall, you can use the back of a door or use a system that hangs over the top of a door.  No holes!  I think using the back of doors is always a savvy way to create more space!

Stretch you laundry room space by going vertical, using walls and doors.

The final organizing product for the laundry room I recommend is:  The washing machine wire shelf!

Washing Machine Wire Shelf from Amazon

Washing Machine Wire Shelf from Amazon

This is a great little shelf to help you get the most out of your space, especially normally unused or wasted space behind the washing machine.  This places laundry detergent and stain removing sprays right at your fingertips!  This organizing product is great for:

  • A laundry room with limited shelf space availability
  • A laundry that needs more shelving/storage options
  • Someone who would like to take their storage shelf with them when they move
  • Clearing the top of the washing machine or dryer

The DIY Organization guru can use this easy and affordable way to stretch and increase storage space!

Laundry Sorter from Storables

Laundry Sorter from Storables

The triple laundry sorter!  I love, love, love mine and have had the same one for years!  It’s been broken, it’s been glued, but it’s still kickin.’  I love this product for three reasons:

  1. It allows you to separate your laundry as you go instead of having to pull out a huge pile onto the floor to separate.  I use one section for jeans and towels, one for darks and one for whites.
  2. It gives you more space than throwing everything into one hamper which would fill to capacity daily in my house.
  3. It helps you teach your kids how to sort laundry when you have them put the correct items together.

This particular hamper from Storables is made with bamboo, so it’s great for the earth-friendly set! Get triple the storage in your laundry room with this handy hamper!

The wall mount drying rack!

Wall Mount Drying Rack from Storables

Wall Mount Drying Rack from Storables

I often find that people have small spaces to work with in their laundry area, sometimes as small as a closet.  This is a great product for making the most of your small space.  Mount the rack to the wall and close up this accordion style rack when you don’t need it.   When you have items that need to be air dried, just pull it out for easy drying.  This is a great way to have the product you need without it taking up a lot of space all the time.

Make the most of your space to organize your laundry area whether you have a room or just a closet!

The other day I was doing something that I do all the time:  yep, laundry.  And I started noticing how dirty the top of my washer and dryer were-ewwww.  And I got on a cleaning kick.  And one thing led to another…until I found a simple and affordable home organization and cleaning solution.  I went to Target and spent just a few dollars to purchase the clear drainboard shown above.

I cleaned the top of my washer and dryer and made one small tweak.  I moved my laundry soap and fabric softener from the top of the dryer over to the top of the washing machine.  That makes more sense, I am using it in the washer, not the dryer!  Funny how you just set something somewhere and that turns into it’s home.  So never stop looking at how you are doing things and making improvements on placing items closest to where you are using them.

Now my laundry soap and fabric softener sit on the clear drainboard.  This helps keep my washing machine top clean and it makes it easier to catch little drips and spills.  A quick and easy solution to laundry room organization!

fl11Good organizing products can really help you stretch your storage space and keep your laundry room or laundry closet in good shape.  Many of us don’t have an entire room dedicated to our laundry area and have to make do with a small space for a chore that isn’t loved by many!

I personally only have a laundry closet.  We have stretched our space by adding two wire shelves above the washer & dryer to store cleaning and paper supplies.  I have also found a triple laundry hamper sorter to be extremely helpful.  It fits next to the washing machine and we can separate whites, darks and towels before they ever hit the washing machine.

Another helpful product to stretch space is a drying rack that pulls out from the wall.  Just push it out of the way when you are done!ft3

Give these organizing products a try and organize your laundry room by stretching your space!

Space contraints can have a big impact on how to organize a small laundry room.  If you have a small laundry space follow these guidelines:

  • Keep only laundry/cleaning related items in the space.  Remove all the extras you are storing that don’t belong.
  • Maximize all available space such as wall space for hanging shelving and the ironing board.
  • Pick your favorite products and pass on the rest to someone else.  You do not need five kinds of spot remover and three brands of bleach.  One of each will do!

Check out the great laundry supply cart above!  This is an excellent way to maximize your storage in a small space.  This chrome cart will hold a lot of supplies and it’s on wheels so it’s easy to pull it out to get what you need or even push it into the room you are cleaning.

Follow these guidelines on how to organize a small laundry room and it will make the chore of doing laundry at least a little less painful!
