Since the kitchen is such a vital center of the home, I look at my kitchen as an important area for home organization, which also means keeping it clean-multiple times a day.  Ug.  Did I mention that the worst chore to me is cleaning out the dishwasher?  But, since staying on top of the kitchen is a necessary evil, I love it when I find shortcuts and easy fixes!  So, here is one that I love for keeping your flat stove top clean:

Take a bottle of the spray oven cleaner that you would use to clean the inside of your oven, spray it on the burners and then turn them all on for a few seconds.  Turn them back off, let the stove top cool a bit and then just wipe clean!

Super easy and it really works to clean quickly!

It doesn’t take much for our cars to get cluttered, especially when we have kids.  I don’t know what it is about every little available crevice that makes kids feel like they need to stuff  wrappers, chewed up gum or pieces of paper in them.  But they do.  So today I was sitting at the drive through line at the bank.  I realized I had some garbage and there was a handy garbage can right next to the car.  So I took a minute to start grabbing wrappers to toss while I had to sit and wait anyway.  One less thing to do later and I took advantage of wait time.  This is something you can do when you are filling your car with gas as well.

So you can declutter your car and lighten the load at least a little bit at your next stop!

November 22nd, 2009 Quick Cleaning Tips

It’s amazing how much you can contribute to your home organization goals with just a few minutes of effort!  Today I am working on balancing work in my office as well as getting some cleaning done around my house.  I’m doing a combination of work, work, work and then stopping for a ”break” to get some cleaning done.  It’s so nice to start the new week with mopped floors and such!

Well, I went down to the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea and decided to get a few quick things done during the time I made my tea.    Now, I’m not a big fan of multi-tasking, but in this case I saw it as taking advantage of a few minutes instead of just standing in front of the microwave waiting impatiently for my water to heat.  So, while the water was in the microwave and then the tea steeped, I was able to clean two glass tabletops, a bathroom mirror, move two chairs back to the table from earlier mopping and even light a candle.

It just goes to show, you can accomplish cleaning and organizing as well in little bits and you will make progress making a comfortable home!

The other day I was doing something that I do all the time:  yep, laundry.  And I started noticing how dirty the top of my washer and dryer were-ewwww.  And I got on a cleaning kick.  And one thing led to another…until I found a simple and affordable home organization and cleaning solution.  I went to Target and spent just a few dollars to purchase the clear drainboard shown above.

I cleaned the top of my washer and dryer and made one small tweak.  I moved my laundry soap and fabric softener from the top of the dryer over to the top of the washing machine.  That makes more sense, I am using it in the washer, not the dryer!  Funny how you just set something somewhere and that turns into it’s home.  So never stop looking at how you are doing things and making improvements on placing items closest to where you are using them.

Now my laundry soap and fabric softener sit on the clear drainboard.  This helps keep my washing machine top clean and it makes it easier to catch little drips and spills.  A quick and easy solution to laundry room organization!

October 22nd, 2009 Quick Cleaning Tips

Recently I spent the best $20 ever!  When it comes to keeping my home organized, keeping it clean is a big part of the process.  As you know, that’s a never ending job-especially if you have kids!  My mom is actually the one who told me about her nifty, little, lightweight vacuum cleaner and I decided I had to have one too.

This little vacuum has been the best thing ever!  It’s super lightweight, it can go from floor to rug, my kids can use it easily and the end comes off to vacuum furniture or add a crevice tool.  It’s been great for little cleanups and it’s been much easier to haul up the stairs than our big vacuum.  You can even have one upstairs and one downstairs!

Keep your home clean easily without a big investment!

September 29th, 2009 Organizing Tips Quick Cleaning Tips

A great way to tackle home organization is to start every day fresh!  Our homes certainly don’t have to be perfect, but whenever you can you should restore order at the end of the day.  It creates a much better atmosphere in the morning and helps everyone in the family get off on the right foot as they head to school, work or while being at home during the day.

Imagine the difference in how you face the day:

  1. You come down to the kitchen and see last night’s dinner dishes in the sink and on the counter.  Cupboard doors are left open and the  dishwasher still has to be cleaned out before you can load it back up.  It makes you feel behind before you even begin!
  2. You come down to the kitchen to see clean counter tops, clean dishes in the cupboards and a clear table ready for a good breakfast to get the day started.

A big difference in how the day gets started here isn’t there?  You don’t have to do it all yourself!  Enlist the family in a bit of clean up time in the evening to keep a handle on each room before it gets out of control.  Make sure you provide homes for all items so it is easy for everyone to know where to put things back.  Home organization tip #10 will start each day on a positive note!

Last night I was in my kitchen with my shoes sticking to the floor in multiple spots.  The kids are still home on summer break, so who knows what we have going on with the floor!  It dawned on me how often we waste time cleaning way more than needed, wasting time and energy.  Most of my downstairs floor is wood, so once I got the mop out I could have easily spent a lot of time mopping almost half of the house.  But why should I?  There really wasn’t a problem with the rest of the floor, it was really just concentrated around the sink and refrigerator.  So, cleaning just those spots was good enough as an in-between cleaning until I really do need to mop the whole floor.  The kids are still home and the swimming pool is still up in the yard, so it won’t be long before a big cleaning, but until then…

July 11th, 2009 Quick Cleaning Tips

It’s important to organize your home, not only to feel good it in but also to help keep your family safe!  Some of the smallest tasks we do can keep up on maintenance in our homes.  Take one example of a task we do all the time-the bigger your family the more we do it:  yes, LAUNDRY!

I was putting laundry in the dryer the other day when I cleaned out the dryer vent.  Something that is very important to do regularly, but then you have the lint to get rid of which can create extra steps to the garbage can.  You can organized yourself easily for this step by placing any type of small container on the dryer if you don’t have room for a garbage can-I know I don’t.  It can be a tiny garbage can, a butter container, even a little box.  Anything that can hold the lint from a few dryer cycles meaning less trips to the garbage can.

I found a few statistics on the web from January 2007 to drive the point home:

  • Clothes dryer fires account for about 15,600 structure fires, 15 deaths and 400 injuries annually.
  • 80% of clothes dryer fires in structures occur in residential buildings.
  • “Failure to clean” is the leading factor contributing to clothes dryer fires in residential buildings

So, you can take small, easy steps to organize your home and help keep your family safe!

June 23rd, 2009 Quick Cleaning Tips

Sometimes the simplest changes can make the biggest difference, especially when it comes to keeping the house clean.  I was finding that every day I felt the need to wipe down my bathroom counter after bits of make-up would find it’s way to the countertop.  But, I had to go out to the hallway where my cleaning supplies were above the washer and dryer, making clean up inconvenient.

Quick fix-I brought an extra bottle of cleaner and a roll of paper towels and stashed them under the bathroom sink.  Now whenever I need to, I can quickly clean with a lot less time and effort!

Take a little bit of time every week, even just 15 minutes, to tidy up your office so you get off to a  fresh start on Monday.  Since I have a home office, I find that Sunday evenings work really well for me.  If you are working in a business office, consider taking the last 15 minutes of your day on Friday to straighten up.  Now this isn’t about a big ‘clear the clutter and reorganize session,’ this is just a little cleaning tune-up that doesn’t require a lot of brain power.

First critical step:  Put on some good music.

Other quick and easy tasks:

  • Dust
  • Empty garbage & recycle
  • Water plants
  • Vacuum
  • Wipe down computer screen
  • Clean keyboard
  • Shred papers
  • Lay out projects to work on during the week
  • Delete e-mails
  • Look over schedule for the week

Final critical step:  Treat yourself to some chocolate-never hurts!

Take a little time each week to clean up  a bit and feel in control when Monday rolls around!
