Home Organization Tip #6: Stop the Mountain While It’s Still a Molehill

When I work with clients on their home organization projects, what I usually find is a person who has an area of their home that has gotten out of control.  At a certain point, that person just stopped making decisions on what to keep and what to let go.  The default answer was to keep everything.  Just throw it on a shelf  or throw it in the room for another day.  Over and over again.  There are a lot of reasons this may happen, but I believe one of the biggest reasons is fear of making a mistake.

What I’d like to encourage you to do is make decisions as they come to you.  When you let them pile up and pile up, the decisions turn into MANY decisions which is overwhelming and stressful.  How many other activities will you then dream up just to get out of it?  Even doing laundry may sound good at that point!

So, when something new comes into your home:  make sure you like it, that you have a place for it and that you will use it.  Keep a donation bag handy at all times for items that don’t fit the bill or to part with something old, making room for something new.  Keep the process manageable by making solid decisions on a regular basis and you will avoid ending up with a mountain of stuff.  Home organization can be easy if you keep belongings from getting out of control!
