Home Organization Tip #9: The Landing Zone

When you are looking for new ways to improve you home organization systems, incorporating a ‘landing zone’ is a must. We all walk into the house and have certain things in our hands that end up being thrown down and then looking like clutter on countertops and tables. I’m all for systems and creating homes for items, but I think we need to make it as easy as possible on ourselves so we can stick with it. It’s also important to work with natural habits, such as throwing things down right when you hit the door.
So if you toss your keys down by the door, work with those habits by hanging up hooks for keys right next to the door. Don’t force yourself to have to walk across the room to hang them up. If you come in and toss the mail on the kitchen counter, then find a nice tray or basket that you like that could sit on the counter to be dedicated just for the mail.
You can do something as simple as the photo above. Just place a decorative basket by the door or on the counter to catch those items that are coming in and out. Just make sure those items continue to move. If they need to leave the house, take them with you when you go. If they need to be taken to another room, take them the next time you pass by. Make sure your ‘landing zone’ doesn’t turn into a clutter zone so you stay on top of your home organization goals.
